MONGY BUSINESS

Some words in the English language are just plain silly.

Take “fishmonger,” or its close cousin “warmonger.”

What is it exactly that these people do? Mong fish or war?

Is “to mong” a transitive or intransitive verb? Inquiring minds want to know.

I went to the fishmonger to get some red snapper,
But when I got there, he had gone to the crapper.
I called out to him: “I am longing
For you to resume your monging.
Come on out and stick a filet in a wrapper.”
