Not that we usually give a rat’s ass about basketball, but She Who Must Be Obeyed and I are both pleased and excited to see the Baylor Lady Bears make the Final Four...and win!
That’s because Emily Niemann, the player who catalyzed the Lady Bears’ turnaround in the first period of yesterday’s game with the LSU Lady Tigers, is a former student of SWMBO’s.
Back when we were living in Houston - this was our second time through, in the 1990’s - SWMBO taught at a private school for students with learning differences, e.g., dyslexia. The school has had some interesting alumni, notably Woody Harrelson. And SWMBO has had some interesting students, including the great-nephew of a notorious Central American dictator. And Emily Niemann.
SWMBO always had a sweet spot for Emily, referring to her as “my Emily,” to the great displeasure of our jealousy-prone daughters. To see her now, enjoying the limelight of the NCAA Final Four - to see her having succeeded in one of her life’s undertakings - this is a sweet, sweet pleasure to one of her old teachers.
It’s a rare thing for me to favor a Bear over a Tiger. Go, Lady Bears!
Update: The Lady Bears beat Michigan State 84-62 Tuesday night to take the NCAA Championship. The margin of victory was the second highest ever in the women’s final...and our little Emily - not so little now at 6'1" - contributed 19 points. Yee-Haw!
