LET HER GO

The Republican intrusion into the lives of American citizens is getting downright scary.

I have refrained from commenting on the Terri Schiavo case so far, mainly because there’s not a lot I can add to the sturm und drang of the debate, but the latest action by the cynical bastards in Washington simply has me stunned.
U.S.lawmakers said on Friday they plan to issue a congressional subpoena to keep alive Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman at the heart of a heated debate over the right to die.

“Later this morning, we will issue a subpoena, which will require hospice administrators and attending physicians to preserve nutrition and hydration for Terri Schiavo to allow Congress to fully understand the procedures and practices that are currently keeping her alive,” three Republican leaders said in a statement.
It amazes me how the Republicans, formerly the staunchest advocates of minimal governmental intrusion in peoples’ lives, have made a complete 180-degree turn. What they are doing now is involving the massive machinery of the Federal government in the most intimate decisions that must be made by families in pain.

Make no mistake about it. This case has turned into a media-driven political circus, and it is no longer about Terri Schiavo, who is in a persistent vegetative state (PVS) from which she will never awaken. It is now about people who are so wrapped up in the Right to Life that they have removed every shred of dignity that this poor woman and her family once had.

It’s very easy to cast Michael Schiavo, Terri’s husband, as the villain in this melodrama (He wants to starve Terri to death!!!), but to me, Terri’s parents, with their stubborn refusal to accept reality, have (tragically) become the bad guys. They are engaging in the worst sort of wishful thinking, hoping that their daughter will magically wake up one day. They refuse to listen to the physicians who have done brain scans that show a good portion of Terri’s brain having atrophied and been replaced by cerebrospinal fluid. They want so badly to have their little girl again...and for that, I do not blame them.

But this is so sad, so unfair to Terri’s husband - and to her.

Nobody likes to hear bad news. Nobody wants to lose a child. Nobody wants to believe the neurologists who have seen this sort of thing so many times before. But Terri has been gone for years now - what lies in that hospital bed is a husk, a shell. Let her go.

And for you cynical bastards in Washington who are turning this family’s agony into such a circus, shame on you. I hope you never have to deal with this sort of suffering on a personal basis, but if you did, maybe you would have some rachmones for Terri.

Let her go.

And you, my Esteemed Readers - whatever your opinions in this matter - make sure you have a Living Will in place, including written directives that tell people - including your well-meaning relatives - how you want to be treated in Terri’s situation. As for me, I don’t want that feeding tube if it means lying in bed like a vegetable. I will make room for someone else to walk the planet.

[Update: The feeding tube was removed Friday, after
Circuit Judge George Greer held a telephone hearing to consider the congressional effort to intervene. Greer rejected that bid and reinstated the order allowing removal of the tube. Congressional lawyers appealed the decision before the Florida Supreme Court, which rejected it.

Late Friday, in yet another attempt to keep Schiavo alive, the House Committee on Government Reform made an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to have Schiavo's feeding tube reinserted, but that application was denied.
A difficult, heart-rending case...but we have a system in place to deal with it. Jeb Bush, the Florida legislature, and the United States Congress tinker with it at their peril. The Supreme Court, at least, knows how things are supposed to work. Now - may this poor woman find peace.]

FRIDAY ARK

What? Friday again?

That means this week’s Friday Ark is boarding over at The Modulator.

Don’t be like those stupid-ass unicorns and dragons who got left behind. All aboard!

HAPPINESS IS A WARM KITTY

Comfy, no?

Yes, happiness is a warm kitty. [Sparky almost got it right.]

And therefore two kitties are twice as good.

She Who Must Be Obeyed is not always pleased when I post pictures of the cats cuddled up next to her. She fears the my Esteemed Readers will get the idea that all she does is lie around in bed, eating bonbons and skritching kitties.

And that would not be true. SWMBO works for a living, as do I. And she teaches, which means she works extra hard and earns every thin dime the Cobb County (yes, that Cobb County) throws at her.

But when you’re on your feet all day, what better comfort than to be on a nice warm bed (better yet, in it) with a warm, friendly mammal cuddled up next to you. And the cats? They’re a bonus.

Now, all we need is some whisky and chocolate. Nirvana!

HAPPY ST. PADRAIG’S DAY

A big Blog d’Elisson shout-out to my Irish (or Irish-derived) friends who are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day today.

They say everyone’s Irish on St. Patty’s Day. Well, no - because that would be unfair to the real Irish - but the sentiment is that everyone enjoys a celebration and so, OK, we’re honorary People o’ Eire for a day.

The Mistress of Sarcasm, normally resident in Savannah, is on her way back from a spring break trip to Austin, Texas. She is happy to have avoided the Great Drunken Debauch that Savannah becomes on March 17. Normally the “Beautiful Lady with the Dirty Face,” Savannah this week is the “Beautiful Lady with the Dirty Face Who Is Throwing Up in the Alley and Taking Off Her Panties In Public So As To Wave Them About.” With all of the local citizenry getting all slaintè-eyed with strong drink, I’m happy that the Mistress is far away from home, for once.

As for me, my pants are a (dull) green today, and I consumed a green bagel at breakfast at the Local Bagel Emporium. That’s not all: Houston Steve was celebrating his second-place win in a raffle, and he graciously took a small fraction of his winnings and purchased breakfast for the Minyan Boyz, so there was Fish a-Plenty.

Pickled herring. Baked salmon. Nova Scotia smoked salmon. Smoked whitefish. Smoked sable.

I tell ya, it was a Fishy Orgy.

In closing, let me share an old Irish-Jewish song with you, my Esteemed Readers, and wish you a most happy St. Patrick’s Day, regardless of your ethnic origin, religious affiliation, skin color, or political leanings.
There’s a little bit of Ireland in a place called Palestine,
And how it ever got there is no concern of mine.
For they sprinkled it with bardust, just to make the barflies grow,
And if you’ll give me a piece of matzoh, I’ll be on the go!

NAME THAT BAND - OR BLOG

If I had a band, what would I want to call it?

The Mistress of Sarcasm has a few good band names up her sleeve, and I could add a few of my own. Of course, this is all highly hypothetical, because the last musical instrument I played in a public performance was the kazoo (really), and the Mistress’s electric bass sits idle, mostly.

But here are a few that might work...either as band names or blog names, take your pick:

- Buttloads o’ Hummus

- Rincoly Peeyanoe (“Wrinkly Piano” in Early Mistress-Speak)

- Red Silk Boxsters

- Peevish:Colon (Far More Irritating than a Pesky’Apostrophe)

What band/blog names can you come up with?

A BID FOR THE BREW

We bloggers can be absolutely shameless in our Pursuit of Goodies - almost as shameless as we are in our “quest for adoration from people who don’t know us.” (That quote cribbed - shamelessly, of course - from Acidman.)

I don’t have a PayPal tip jar - now, that really would be shameless, since I’m still using cheap-ass Blogger - and I don’t put up an Amazon wish list. Not yet, anyway. But now, thanks to The Zero Boss, I have an opportunity to whore myself out for some fine tea.

That’s Adagio Tea, folks.

Just click the link above to find out more about this wonderful product...a product that I have never tried, myself, but plan to as soon as their freebie shows up in the mail.

And I sure hope it’s a nice freebie.

Jay had to, ahh, deal with the Customer Service folks to get the nice freebie. And I can sure understand his consternation. It’s hell when you’re told you’re gonna get a freeb that never shows up.

Hell, I tell ya.

Now - go tell those nice people at Adagio Tea how much you love ’em. Me, I think I need to take a shower.

CARNIVAL OF THE VANITIES #130

Bird’s Eye View hosts Edition #130 of Carnival of the Vanities this week.

Bird, AKA The Radical Centrist - he who writes Bird’s Eye View as well as the eponymous blog The Radical Centrist - is a man after my own heart. He’s a man who appreciates a fine fedora. Men in hats, out to take over the world!

And because of Bird’s appreciation of the fedora, Blog d’Elisson gets the coveted lead-off position in the Carnival. Boo-yah!

One small point: When you go to Bird’s Eye View, just be aware that there’s a quirk in the blog template that causes the main content to load below the left sidebar. You can sit there and stare at an empty page for a long time unless you think to scroll all the way down to where that left bar ends. Bird, you just might want to fix that quirk (which does not affect The Radical Centrist) - because it will tend to drive traffic off your site. Easily-frustrated blogsurfers who can’t be bothered to scroll, anyway. [This may be an artifact of my monitor at the office. At home the page loaded properly. I’m just letting you know...]

But do go and visit the Carnival. Bird has taken the time to write fairly lengthy intros to the various posts, meaning he has actually read them. Such diligence should be rewarded!

Plus, the guy wears a fedora. ’Nuff said!

EAT AN ANIMAL FOR PETA REDUX

Mmmmm...ducks.

Yesterday, in observance of International Eat an Animal for PETA Day, I enjoyed the flesh of many kinds of animals, including fish, birds, and mammals.

Tasty good.

For breakfast, Baked Salmon, AKA Kippered Salmon. Fish may not have the most advanced central nervous systems amongst the living things on this planet, but their flesh is plenty yummy, especially served up alongside some romaine lettuce and thinly sliced Vidalia onion.

For lunch, a nice, beefy chunk of Sirloin Steak. Leftovers, schmeftovers - when something tastes this good, who cares that you had it for dinner two days ago? Liberally coated with Montreal Steak Seasoning and lovingly grilled, this honkin’ hunk of meaty magnificence was delicious hot...and made an excellent cold lunch when sliced.

For dinner (supper in some circles), Take-Out Chinese Food. Or is it Take-In? I take it out of the restaurant, I take it into my car, and I then take it out of my car and into the house. Then I take it out of the sack, throw it on a plate, then put it into my mouth. Nothing fancy: Hot and Sour Soup for She Who Must Be Obeyed (and I am all too happy to obey when her command is, “Go order us up some Chinese"), Won Ton Soup for me, Moo-Shu Chicken, House Special Egg Foo Yung, and sweet Barbecued Boneless Spareribs made from...well, let’s just say it was some kind of mammal. Hell, the Egg Foo Yung alone allowed us to cover the entire Fish, Bird, and Mammal spectrum...

You get the idea. We dined well yesterday, we two, despite our not being in Houston to enjoy a fine Repast o’ Mudbugs with Laurence Simon. TFB.

Now: what’s for lunch?

SALADE MORT DE VAMPYR

It’s perverse to post a salad recipe today, seeing as it is International Eat an Animal for PETA Day, but I figure you need to have something to accompany that nice Prime Rib, porterhouse, filet mignon, T-bone, New York strip, cheeseburger, saddle of lamb, or what have you. And a little roughage is not only good for you, it’s tasty, too!

This recipe comes to us courtesy of Bro-in-Law d’Elisson, who spent a couple of years living with us as he studied for his degree in Culinary Arts at the Art Institute of Houston. And the post title should tell you that there’s plenty of garlic in this bad boy.

Wilted Spinach Salad with Pine Nuts and Dried Currants

Nice pile of fresh baby spinach leaves, washed and dried
Quarter-cup extra-virgin olive oil
3 or 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced
Quarter-cup pine nuts
Quarter-cup dried currants
Pecorino Romano cheese

Put the washed and dried spinach leaves in a bowl.

Toast the pine nuts in a heavy skillet over medium-high heat, shaking frequently, until golden brown. Do not let ’em burn: the idea is to bring out the full aroma of the pine nuts without turning them into little carbonized Pellets o’ Death. Set aside.

Meanwhile, soak the currants in a dish of warm water.

Throw the garlic in a small saucepan with the olive oil over medium-high heat. Let it get nice and hot so that small bubbles appear, but do not let the garlic brown. When the oil is hot, dump it (and the garlic!) into the bowl with the spinach. Toss well until the spinach is slightly wilted.

Throw in the toasted pine nuts. Drain the currants and throw them in, too.

Toss well, then cover liberally with freshly grated Pecorino Romano. Toss again to distribute the cheese, then finish off with additional grated cheese on top.

Feeling adventurous? Use dried blueberries instead of the dried currants. You don’t need to soak ’em, by the way, but some folks like a softer texture to their dead fruit.

I love this salad, I really do. Sometimes I love it a little too much, and there are consequences, mainly owing to the high concentration of garlic and chlorophyll. But I will graciously spare you the details.

MAPS? WE GOT MAPS

Remember all of those dopey red and blue maps we were seeing so much of after the 2004 election?

It seemed that everyone was trying to use maps to make points about red states, blue states, red counties, blue counties, on and on and on.

Well, Michael Gastner, Cosma Shalizi, and Mark Newman over at the University of Michigan have come up with several inventive ways to create graphical interpretations of the 2004 election results. What they’ve done is to create a series of cartograms - maps in which the area of the various political units (states or counties) is adjusted to reflect their population or electoral vote count. It conveys (I believe) a better picture of the relative political strength of the various parties - the acreage of the states or counties, which is what shows on a normal map, really has nothing to do with how many voted wingnut or moonbat.

Conventional map showing 2004 election results by county.

Here’s a conventional map that shows the 2004 election results by county. The color scale is nonlinear - solid red for 70% Republican or more, blue for 70% Democrat or more, shades of purple in between. Note that there are a lot of ways to play with the colors, depending on how you want to spin the data or what, exactly, you are trying to measure. You can use solid red or blue to show who won - or more important, who is running things. Or you can blend the red and blue to reflect the actual percentage results, which gives you a better picture of the blend of voters in a given geography. The image shown is a sort of compromise between these extremes, but I like it from an esthetic standpoint.

Now let’s look at a cartogram that shows the same data, using the same color scale. Here, the counties have been scaled to reflect their population. The result is a strange-looking (but perversely beautiful) map of the country, one that shows a lot more blue than the first map.

EAT AN ANIMAL FOR PETA

Tomorrow is the Ides of March - International Eat an Animal for PETA Day.

And I will take it a step further. I will not content myself with merely eating an animal. I want mammal.

I don’t know what your plans are, but as for me, there’s a honkin’ big chunk of cold grilled sirloin in the fridge with my name on it. Unless She Who Must Be Obeyed gets there first.

As a fallback option, there are a couple of huge T-bones in the freezer.

And I mustn’t forget that nice, tender leg of Australian Spring Lamb. SWMBO won’t go anywhere near lamb, which means there will be More for Me.

Hell, I’ve worked up such an appetite, only a Country and Western Song will do to relax me:
You can have your birds and your fishies, too
Of course, I know they’re good for you
But sometimes nothin’ but Red Meat will do
Eat a Mammal for PETA.

Brown rice is nice, but I won’t think twice
And that bland ol’ tofu needs too much spice.
If you’re feelin’ hungry, take my advice -
Eat a Mammal for PETA.

You got tasty cows and delicious lambs
And if ya ain’t Jewish, ya even got hams.
I buy ’em by the gross at Costco or Sam’s -
Eat a Mammal for PETA.

[I got dibs on them ribs, sibs...]

So grab some beef, or bear, or even some beaver.
Get out of the way and hand me that cleaver,
I’m deep in the grip of Carnivorous Fever.
Eat a Mammal for PETA!
Thankyewverymuch.

I VANT TO BE ALONE

I vant to be alone.

When I, Miss Hakuna, wish to have a little “alone time” – which is often – I will sometimes secret myself between the two mattresses of the guest room trundle bed. The Great Bifurcated Gods do not often trouble me there.

It is quiet, and it has that pleasant nest-like feeling to it, like being snuggled up next to Momma Kitty so long ago...

Until Mr. Busybody with the grubby, pokey hands comes along. Dammit, I vant to be alone!

The mysterious red dot.

And now that you’ve dragged me out of my Sanctum Sanctorum and let me cuddle up against the Leg o’ SWMBO, what the hell is this annoying red dot?

Can I eat it? No.

Can I touch it? No.

Can I smell it? No.

And since the Great Bifurcated Gods had my genitalia adjusted when I was a kitty, I do not even care to screw it.

Why, then, do I want it so much?

GUYS AND BLOGS

Blogging for Books

[Following is my entry in the Blogging for Books contest #9, hosted by The Zero Boss. This month, entrants must write a blog post about any incident in their lives in the style of their favorite author. The author can specialize in either fiction or nonfiction, and can even be another blogger. See if you can figure out whose style I used...]

It is 8 o’clock of a Sunday evening and I am sitting in Mindy’s restaurant on Broadway partaking of some cheese blintzes, which is a very fine dish indeed, when in walks a fellow with a white fedora. Of course I know this fellow to be none other than Elisson, because of all the citizens who are likely to be in Mindy’s restaurant at any given time, he is the only one who is likely to be sporting a white fedora, never mind that it is the middle of March.

And this Elisson with the fedora comes right up to me and gives me a big hello, and I give him a big hello right back, as Elisson is always ready with the jokes and is even ready to stand a citizen to a platter of blintzes when said citizen has lost all of his potatoes on some proposition or another. That is not the case with me this fine evening, but it never hurts to be prepared, as them Boy Scout types would say.

Well, Elisson sits down and orders a dish of gefillte fish with horseradish, a dish for which Mindy’s is well-known and even famous, and we talk about how things on Broadway are not the same as they were in the old days. I notice that the older a citizen gets, the more likely he is to talk about how things are not the same as in the old days, and Elisson is no exception, seeing as how he is getting a bit long in the tooth.

“You notice how nobody on Broadway seems to care about the old stuff anymore?” says Elisson. “Nobody goes to the races anymore, and I am thinking that this is because the OTB came in and took all the fun out of it. And nobody seems to care about shooting some craps anymore, because you can run down to Atlantic City or up to Foxwoods and shoot dice, completely on the up-and-up. Even poker has lost its mystery – they show it on the television, and every Tom, Dick, and Harry is now studying Texas Hold ’Em like a doll studies a guy’s wallet. I am thinking that this has become a boring existence any more.”

“You have a good point,” says I. “Why, it seems that it is a good long stretch since I see most of the old gang. Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson, Brandy Bottle Bates, Sorrowful Jones…come to think of it, these guys all must be playing the duck.”

And my fedora-wearing friend cannot help but agree with me, because it is as plain as the beezer on Durante’s kisser that lately many of these fine citizens are thin on the ground.

“I will lay you plenty of five-to-seven,” says Elisson, “that this blogging business has very much and not some little to do with it, too.

“Why, it seems to me that there is a whole new gang of citizens on Broadway, and they spend all of their time wearing pajamas and writing stuff that would be in the daily bladder, except that these guys do not care to write for the daily bladder as the dress code for reporter types, last I have heard, does not include pajamas.”

Elisson is right as rain about this, and as we are chowing down on our platters of blintzes and gefillte fish and talking about old times, I remember that some of these blogging citizens are not only writing such things as would be printed in the daily bladders, but they are also coming up with interesting propositions.

Propositions have been around at least as long as Broadway and these Johnny-come-lately bloggers are not the only ones who have the good ideas. I recall the time when Sky Masterson makes himself a few potatoes off of a fellow citizen in this manner. At the Polo Grounds, he buys himself a bag of peanuts from Schultzy the Gimp and dumps them in his pocket, and after the game is over, he says like this to the citizens walking with him toward the parking lot:

“What price I cannot throw one of these peanuts past second base from behind home plate?”

Well, everybody with two brain cells to rub together knows that a peanut is too light to throw much of anywhere, so Nebbish Nelson, who never met a proposition that he did not like, says, “You can have three-to-one from me, buddy.”

“Done – two Ben Franklins against six,” says Sky, and he proceeds to stand behind home plate, takes a peanut out of his pocket and whips it practically to the warning track. This is a most astonishing throw indeed, and it is a good thing for Sky that he is nowhere in the vicinity of Nebbish when it comes out that the peanut Sky throws is not a typical Schultzy the Gimp offering, but instead has been filled with lead.

But these blogging citizens have other propositions that are interesting in their own ways. Some of them have doped out a way to get a free iPod, whatever that is, and that must be a good thing because these iPods are costing not a little amount of moolouw over at the Apple store, whatever that is.

And there is another one that operates a contest every month and the citizen who writes the best “blog-post” wins a book. I myself have worked this proposition a few times but have zilch to show for it, but someone must think it is a good idea because a whole raft of guy bloggers and doll bloggers are writing like one-legged jockeys on nose candy in order to get hold of this book.

Well, of a sudden, Elisson jumps out of his chair and runs over to the front door of Mindy’s, where he hauls off and pastes a citizen right in the beezer and proceeds to give said citizen the old heave-o right out Mindy’s front door.

Mindy is, of course, none too pleased at this turn of events and so he says to Elisson, “What for did you put the blast on that citizen who, for all you know, could have been one of my regular customers? I can not afford to have my patrons afraid to come in here for a plate of sauerkraut and ribs lest some guy in a white fedora smack them upside the snoot. Please explain this to me, or I will have Cooksie give you the old heave-o.”

And Elisson explains things like this:

“A couple of months ago, this guy Cap, who seems to be on the square, comes out with a proposition. You write the best fifty-word movie review, and Cap sends you a couple books.

“And I am thinking that this is a good proposition, because I can write fifty words twice as fast as I can write one hundred words, and also, I am very interested to read the books that Cap is sending to the winner of this proposition.

“So I write the fifty words and there is nobody else that even bothers to write the fifty words, and I am thinking that there is not a single citizen who will say ‘Boo’ to me if I declare myself to be the winner of the proposition. But there is not a word from Cap on this matter.

“And then one day I send a note to Cap and he says that he is a ‘smacked ass’ or some such for forgetting about the proposition, and that I have won the proposition and he will send me the books. He even writes about this on his blog.

“But another month goes by, and there are no books, and I am a disappointed citizen.

“I send a second note and Cap sends back the same sort of answer, and I am beginning to think that I will never see those books unless maybe I am sending Gravel-Voice Larry to collect them, and I do not wish to do this because getting Gravel-Voice Larry involved usually means someone will get his feelings and other appendages hurt. So I am just a little bit frustrated, when of a sudden I see none other than Cap himself coming in the front door just now, and I am compelled to put the blast on him.”

And at this, Mindy says, “You have done me a favor, then, because I don’t serve Welsh Rabbit in my restaurant, if you know what I mean. Lunch is on me, boys.”

And then it occurs to me that Mindy is not referring to any melted cheese, or for that matter to anyone from Portmeirion or one of them places with two L’s next to each other, but to Cap, whose real handle is Capo di Nil, which translates to “Zero Boss” any day of the week, except my friend Elisson says it really means “Zero Books.”

ICE CREAM

If you were ice cream, what flavor would you be?

Sounds like a Barbara Walters question, doesn’t it? But no.

This evening, She Who Must Be Obeyed, the Mistress of Sarcasm, and I were enjoying a Beefy Repast. The Mistress is between quarters at school, so she was getting her dose of Home Cookin’ before heading off to visit friends in Texas. She was describing some friends at school that were going out with each other despite their being dramatically different in habits and temperament.

The young lady is exactly that: the quintessential Southern Belle, genteel, well-dressed, courtly of manner, eschewing vulgar language. By contrast, her boyfriend is a Northerner: sloppy, with machine-gun speech that can spray a room with extreme vulgarity in no time flat.

But for some reason, they’re an “item.” Maybe opposites do attract - for a while, anyway, before the novelty wears off.

The Mistress was relating how this couple had gone out to get some ice cream. Southern Belle asked her boyfriend, “If I were ice cream, what flavor would I be?”

Northern Boyfriend considered this briefly and, in a languid Savannah-style drawl, responded, “Pralines and Dick.”

So: what flavor of ice cream are you?

INSERT YOUR CAPTION HERE

I saw this picture in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was all too happy to snarf up a copy from Tony Pierce’s blog.

All it needs is a good caption. Something better than “Putting the ‘Ga’ in the PGA?” or “Sinking Putz.”

Come to think of it, “Insert” may have been a poor choice of words.

KITTIES CROSSING THE DELAWARE

Tiger Magazine, September 1972.

Well, a tiger is a cat, innit?

I’m giving Hakuna and Matata a break this week. Filling in for them is this motley crew of Princeton tigers, reenacting Washington’s famous Crossing of the Delaware on this vintage magazine cover.

Note the demented glare in the eyes of Tiger Washington. You’d be demented, too, if you were in the middle of a freezing river while some asshole was trying to draw a picture of you.

MR. JET SET

Yeah. Mr. Jet Set - dat’s me.

Yesterday, I arose at what the Mistress of Sarcasm calls “the butt-crack of dawn” to catch a flight to New Jersey. After lunch with a customer near the Meadowlands, it was back to the airport and home in time for dinner.

That “home in time for dinner” business was looking a bit sketchy for a while. During lunch, my airline called to inform me that my flight home had been cancelled. Not to worry, they said - I had a seat on the very next flight, departing an hour later. Foo.

But in a rare Stroke o’ Travel Luck, I was able to get back to EWR in time to catch a flight an hour earlier than my original return. Woo-Hoo!

While I was dashing through Newark, something occurred to me. Maybe I was just noticing it for the first time, but...

Nobody uses pay phones any more. Of all the pay phones I saw yesterday, not a single one was being used.

Thanks to cell phone technology, the pay phone is now the buggy-whip of the early twenty-first century. It’s obsolete.

Hell, some of the newer technologies are making plain ol’ cell phones look ancient. BlackBerries. Those nutty Bluetooth earpieces. Now, when you see someone wandering around, mumbling to himself, it’s like as not that he’s a high-powered CEO and not just some random psychotic. (Although if he has a stream of urine dribbling down his pant leg, I’d be placing my money on “psycho.”)

Beepers? Who uses them anymore? Used to be, you’d see someone with two or three beepers hanging off his belt, you would think, “Hey, this guy’s important. Either that, or he hasn’t heard about Beep Waiting.” Now, it’s just as easy to get a text message on your phone...or voice mail.

I’m not gonna miss the pay phone. As an old Road Warrior, I’ve spent too many hours in hotels and airports, trying to place long-distance credit card calls on old rotary phones. Or waiting for a space to open up at that bank of phones near my departure gate. Superman may diagree with me - last time he tried to change while holding nothing but a BlackBerry in his hands, he was arrested for indecent exposure. But that’s his problem, not mine.

Now, what’s the next technology that will be circling the drain?

IN A MEMELY MOOD

It’s about time for me to put up one of my “What I’ve Been Reading Lately” posts, but for right now, since I don’t feel like writing the usual mini-reviews, I’m going to do it Meme-Style.

The Deal:

On your own blog, post the names of the last ten books you read, and, if you remember it, the months you read the first and the last titles on the list. Start the list with the last book you finished.

Here’s my list:

1. The Taste of America - John L. Hess and Karen Hess (March 2005)
2. Who Wrote the Bible? - Richard Elliott Friedman
3. The Mysteries of Pittsburgh - Michael Chabon
4. Homeward Bound - Harry Turtledove
5. Les Halles Cookbook - Anthony Bourdain
6. My Movie Business: A Memoir - John Irving
7. State of Fear - Michael Crichton
8. Days of Infamy - Harry Turtledove
9. ’Scuse Me While I Whip This Out - Kinky Friedman
10. Shanda: The Making and Breaking of a Self-Loathing Jew - Neal Karlen (November 2004)

I’ll regale you with my High and Mighty Opinion on each of these puppies...soon. Meanwhile, it looks like blogging is interfering with my reading. I’m about 2-3 books behind my usual pace.

Now: what have you been reading? (Beside this stupid blog, that is.)

GIANTS OF THE BLOGGING WORLD

When giants meet, the earth shakes. Or at least gets nervous bowels.

Here we see Charlie Hatton (Where The Hell Was I?) and Elisson meeting for the first time. A brief period of mutual assessment and admiration...

...gives way to shop talk, anecdotes, and mildly coarse behavior. But not too coarse: there are ladies present!

Charlie and Elisson.

A few drinks...some Persian food...and it’s as if we’ve known each other for years.

Blogging - it’s more than just flinging around a bunch of electrons, folks!

MAD FLAVA

A couple of years ago, Elder Daughter turned me on to a new flavor of toothpaste.

[“Turned me on to.” Now, there’s a real ’60’s expression. Bejus, am I showing my age. Oy.]

Anyway, I don’t know about you, but every so often, I get tired of the same old Minty Freshness. Pfaugh. So I start jonesing for an Interesting New Flavor.

Tom’s of Maine has a few unusual ones. They have a Fennel toothpaste I like, and a Gingermint flavor that is pretty good...but after half a tube of these bad boys, I find myself looking for the plain ol’ Colgate again.

Crest - a brand I normally despise - came out with a few oddball flavors, including a mint gel with some horrendous orangey-bubblegummy pong that made me want to boil my mouth so as to rid myself of the taste. Feh.

But Elder Daughter had spent a year in England a couple of years ago and had discovered a new flavor of Colgate that she was also able to buy back home. There’s a little Indian spice shop cum grocery in her neighborhood - Shalimar, I believe the name is - and they carry Colgate Herbal from time to time. The toothpaste is made in India, and it has an indescribable herbal flavor that is refreshing, never seems to get tiresome, and is just plain different.

After trying this stuff, I simply had to get my hands on it. But unless you live conveniently near an Indian drugstore (“chemist”) or market, fuhgeddaboudit.

I went so far as to call Colgate to find out where I could score me some of that fine Colgate Herbal, and to my astonishment, they told me that they were getting ready to introduce it in the States the very next month! Holy Crap, sez I to myself - there is a Gawd!

Well, the next month came around (this was January 2003, if my memory serves), and sure enough, Colgate “Herbal White” began appearing on supermaket shelves. I bought me a shitload of that stuff.

But I was disappointed to find that it is not the same as the made-in-India Colgate Herbal, alas.

Oh, it’s good, don’t get me wrong. Very good. It has been my standard toothpaste for these two years - except for abortive attempts to check out things like Crest and their Orange Bubblegum Wanna Makeya Puke flavored gel.

But it just ain’t the same.

The flavor is less intense. It’s almost as if they were ready to try something bold and different but got cold feet at the last minute, ratcheting the “herbal” flavor components back so that Americans - big flavor wusses that we are - would not be scared off by the exotic intensity of the Real Thing.

Well, screw that. The Real Thing is back in stock at that little Indian grocery, and I just bought a heap o’ toothpaste. I do believe a little Dental Hygiene is in order...

WE’RE NOT (JUST) IN KANSAS ANYMORE

It looks like the nutjobs at the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas don’t have enough “Sodomites” to harrass in their own neck of the woods, so they’ve come to Georgia, according to this squib in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
Two days after a small group of fundamentalist Christians from Kansas began a strident protest against a proposed gay student support group at a high school in the Georgia mountains, the townspeople said enough is enough.

On Monday morning, about 100 people showed up with picket signs in front of White County High School to counter the eight members of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka who had flown in on Saturday and staged loud demonstrations against the gay club as well as seven local churches.

“Go back to Kansas!” the Georgians shouted.
Yes, these assholes fine, upstanding, Godly people had to schlep themselves all the way to Cleveland, Georgia, a hotbed of gayness.

Why Cleveland? Well, it seems that a high school student there, one Kerry Pacer, started a Gay-Straight Alliance. When she asked to have meetings at the school, the school administration started peeing their collective pants...and the media latched on to the story. Plenty of people in Cleveland are still antsy about the Gay-Straight Alliance, but these outsiders have managed to get pretty much everyone bent out of shape.
The demonstrators’ behavior upset even many in Cleveland who oppose the gay school club, such as Marcella Beasley, 79, a member of Cleveland Church of God, who is trying to convert her gay nephew because she worries that “he can’t go to heaven as a homosexual.”
Perhaps it was some of the lofty sentiments expressed by the Kansans that got people upset:
The locals were especially livid at the out-of-towners for showing up at churches on Sunday morning before services and hurling at worshippers such insults as “Thank God for 9/11,” “God hates you” and ”Your pastor is lying.” The fundamentalists said the churches were targeted because they had not condemned homosexuality strongly enough.
My own opinion? Any American who says “Thank God for 9/11” should either be dragged off and shot...or better yet, be handed over to a roomful of victims’ family members for a little, mmmmm, re-education.

And these Westboro assclowns? Ship ’em back to Kansas and send ’em back to their church. Then Waco the sonsabitches.

MEDITATION OF A TIGER IN CANTAB-LAND

It is a treat so very rare
To walk about in Harvard Square
Where men and women, very scholarly
Prepare for futures most white-collarly.
They scurry hither, to and fro.
Tuition dollars flow and flow.
These hallowed halls of Academe -
They really make me want to scream.

WEEKEND WRAP-UP

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I are now back home in the ATL after a superb weekend with Elder Daughter...the best trip we’ve had up there in quite some time.

Logistics were convenient, with us staying in a B&B fairly close to Elder Daughter’s place. Even more important, the weather cooperated. Sure, it was cold, but we expect it to be cold in Boston in early March. That’s like the sun coming up in the morning - it’s normal, fer cryin’ out loud!

You’ve already heard about the Major-League Eating we did over the weekend. But Elder Daughter, She Who Must Be Obeyed, and I also got some serious shopping accomplished in between Face-Stuffing Exercises. Hell, we even sucked Kody in on the action. Some nice dress shirts for me and shoes for E.D. at Filene’s Basement (soon to be history), a book for Nephew William at Curious George, some Asian tchotchkes and silk scarves at Intara Wut (where the owner’s husband turns out to be a former Long Island Boy like me). Vintage clothing (a sweater for E.D.) from Karma on the North End. SWMBO even found a pile of Wade Whimsies at a secondhand shop on Mass Ave over by MIT.

There was plenty of entertainment, even if you weren’t looking for it. At the MIT student center, we enjoyed watching a young man dancing his brains out on one of those “Dance Party” video games, where you jump around on an electronic footpad, following the machine’s choreography. Just watching this kid got us all sweaty - he claims to have lost 25 pounds over the last four months from playing, and it’s easy to see why.

We also visited the MIT Museum, an essential Cambridge stop for an engineer like me. Seeing Harold Edgerton’s high-speed flash photographs and equipment was a special treat, but there was plenty of other fascinating stuff. The place is worth the price of admission for the holography exhibits alone.

Before leaving Cambridge, of course, we had to visit L.A. Burdick and have some of their Kick-Ass Hot Chocolate. Starbuck’s may have their Chantico - and, don’t get me wrong, I think the Chantico is amazing - but, well, I’ll see your Chantico and raise you a Burdick’s Hot Chocolate. Bittersweet, rich...Holy Crap, is it good. A couple of madeleines for roughage, and I was on a sugar ’n’ theobromine high the rest of the afternoon.

L.A. Burdick. We got ya hot chocolate, right here.

All too soon, it was time to head back to Logan to catch our flight back home.

It was tough saying farewell to Elder Daughter, but we’ll be seeing her again soon - the Mistress of Sarcasm’s graduation is less than three months away!

IT AIN'T JUST BEANS HERE

Eat a little, shop a little
Eat a little, shop a little
Eat, eat, eat
Shop a lot
Eat a little more

Shop a little, eat a little
Shop a little, eat a little
Shop, shop, shop
Eat a lot
Shop a little more
- Elder Daughter

Bostonians hate it when people call their town “Beantown,” and I think I know why.

There's a hell of a lot more to eat here than mere beans.

Not that beans are a bad thing. We’ll get to that in a moment.

Dinner Friday night was in Watertown at Molano, a fine Iranian (AKA Persian) restaurant, with She Who Must Be Obeyed, Elder Daughter, her boyfriend Kody, and the estimable Charlie of Where The Hell Was I? No beans. Maybe a random lentil among all the rice and meat.

Saturday, hamburgers and Turkey Chipotle Chili were on the menu when we took lunch at Miracle of Science, a fine little restaurant and drinky-spot hard by the MIT campus. Elder Daughter knows the place well - she’s a former employee - and I can tell you that they make an excellent “Dark and Stormy.” That’s ginger beer with a huge Myer’s Jamaican Rum depth charge. Yummers. Beans enter the picture here as a component of the chili SWMBO ordered.

That evening, we shifted gears and enjoyed a serious Brazilian dinner at Muqueca in Cambridge’s Inman Square. This is where beans enter Heavy Rotation, with Kody and me ordering up the feijoada. Feijoada is the national dish of Brazil, a hearty black bean-based meat stew, served over rice and alongside shredded kale and fried plantains. We washed down our dinner with fruit juices and guarana, the favorite soft drink of Brazil, a sort of Bizarro-world version of cola with a subtle bubble-gum pong. This meal was a major dose of beany, meaty goodness, very like a Brazilian cholent complete with all of the concomitant side effects. After this, it was quietly decided that the remainder of our visit would be bean-free. ’Nuff said.

Sunday. What’s the best Sunday morning meal, aside from bagels and lox? Why, it’s dim sum, for which we journeyed over to Ocean Pearl in Boston's Chinatown. Holy Crap - three hours of leisurely tea-drinking and face-stuffing, the likes of which I haven’t had since my last trip to Hong Kong 14 years ago.

All that food...but an hour later a few hours later, we were hungry again (!) so we headed off to the North Side for espresso and pastry at Caffé Vittoria. SWMBO is an ardent admirer of their espresso martini (the "North Side Express"), and their sfogliatelle are to die for. Myself, I made sure to have a shot of Averno to keep the ol’ kishkes functioning under the unaccustomed load. We managed to kill three hours at CV, which meant...

Another meal. We stayed in the North End and ate at a hole-in-the-wall eatery (La Famiglia Giorgio’s) that offered gargantuan potions of pasta, served up by a waitress who was alternately surly and grandmotherly - a kind of Italian version of the waiters at the old Ratner’s dairy restaurant in New York. The walk back to the Boston Common helped keep us from collapsing under our own weight.

The day’s activities were capped off by a hip-hop show back in Cambridge at the All-Asia Cafe, featuring a group called losstunnown and some amazing breakdancing.

The prologue to this post mentioned shopping, didn’t it? More about that later.

Tomorrow? Burdick’s. Gotta go to L.A. Burdick, the Cathedral o’ Chocolate.

And so, to bed. Urp.

LITERATURE IN THE LAND OF THE BEAN AND THE COD

"And here's to good old Boston
The land of the bean and the cod
Where the Lowells talk only to Cabots
And the Cabots talk only to God."
- Author Unknown

Among Elder Daughter's activities has been running a Book Club she started a couple of years ago at Darwin's.

We are pleased to report that she is still involved with the Club, and I am all too happy to pimp it tell my Esteemed Readers all about it. The next meeting will be at 7 pm on Sunday, March 20, and will feature Kristie Helms, author of Dish It Up, Baby. If you live in the Boston area, stop in to Darwin's, meet Elder Daughter, and visit with a fascinating and talented writer, to boot!

BLOGGIN' IN BOSTON

Well, not Boston, exactly. Cambridge.

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I arrived here late Thursday night, after an uneventful flight in a widebody jet. Uneventful, of course, is a relative term, especially if you are a Nervous Flyer like SWMBO.

"What's that?"

"Those are the flaps being retracted, Sweetie. Not to worry."

"What's that?"

"Those are the airbrakes, hon. Relax."

"What was that noise?"

"Landing gear."

"Why are those masks dropping from the ceiling?"

"That's just the oxygen, honey. We're ALL GONNA DIE WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE YAGGGGHHHHHHH"

Just kidding about that last one.

I ride the Great Silver Aerial Bus almost every week, and so I don't notice all those little jolts, bumps, and strange noises. But for SWMBO, the Unpleasant Experience o' Flying provides an excuse to enjoy an Adult Beverage or two.

But we made it. A quick cab ride got us to our guest house in Cambridge, and Elder Daughter ran right over to see us.

We had a pleasant day yesterday, having had a chance to sleep in (no cats to walk upon our faces) and take a leisurely breakfast. Elder Daughter had to work, so we traipsed over to Harvard Square and hung out after taking coffee at Darwin's.

At mid-day, we accompanied Elder Daughter as she took care of one of her Odd Jobs - dogsitting for a Well-Known Radio Personality. Generally, this involves trying to take the dog - an elderly Bichon Frisee or some such beast - for a walk, then giving up in frustration as the ill-tempered cur refuses to allow himself to be saddled. (Or leashed). Today, Elder Daughter's task was to clean up the Random Piles o' Shit and Puddles o' Piss that Mr. Dog had left in his impatience. This is not, alas, a rare event, leading me to suspect the Mr. Dog will soon have a date with Mr. Needle o' Nepenthe.

The visit with Mr. Dog was interesting to us because the Well-Known Radio Personality has such interesting mementoes on her shelves. A fistful of Emmy awards. A Peabody award. Photographs featuring dignitaries of various stripes, including at least one former President. Yeef.

Some time later, after a visit to Chez Elder Daughter d'Elisson, we headed off to Watertown for the Great New England Blogmeet.

Well, I exaggerate a wee bit. What we did was meet up with Charlie, the guy who writes Where The Hell Was I?, one of my favorite Funny-Ass Blogs.

Charlie is an affable guy, very much what you'd expect from reading his blog. Tall, he is, and apparently immune to cold. We walked around in weather that was somewhere between "bracing" and "seriously nipple-stiffening," with us in heavy coats and him in a rugby shirt, but it never seemed to bother him. He got to meet me, SWMBO, Elder Daughter, ED's boyfriend Kody - an Extreme Dose o' Elisson, no doubt - but seemed to deal with the shock well enough. We enjoyed trading Bloggy War Stories 'n' all dat, over a superb Persian dinner. Charlie will probably need several weeks to recover from the onslaught experience...several hours of Bullshit d'Elisson. But such is the life of a Rawk Stah.

Shirin Polo...it's what's for dinner. And I really dug the doogh. Picture a beverage that looks like milk, in a tall glass with ice, and a completely unexpected, savory-minty flavor and you'll have some idea of doogh. Not your typical glass of Sweet Iced Tea.

It's Saturday morning now, and She Who Must Be Obeyed, Elder Daughter, and Kody await my presence for the day's activities. We are off to the bowels of Harvard, the Hated Enemy Camp. Leave it to me to schedule a visit for Parent's Weekend.

Laters, Esteemed Readers. Now go over and visit Charlie and tell 'im Elisson sent ya.

ONE MORE USELESS MEME FOR TH’ ROAD

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I are getting ready to ride the Great Silver Aerial Bus to Boston, where we will visit Elder Daughter. Yee-Haw!

To provide y’all with some Mindless Amusement, here’s a meme I copped from The Modulator - that very same Modulator who posts the Friday Ark.

What States Have You Been IN?

Bold the states you’ve visited, underline the states you’ve lived in, and italicize the state you’re currently in.

If you’re a lazy-ass like me, you can use this nifty link to have the code generated for you. [But note that the code you get does not allow you to select multiple categories. Not that it matters, because if you’ve ever lived in a state, you can be presumed to have visited it. Duh.]

Here’s my response. Some of the states on my “visited” list were the recipients of very short visits indeed. Maine, a few minutes. Alaska, an hour in the Anchorage airport enroute from Seoul, Korea to Paris (!) But how anal-retentive do you have to be to want to break the list down into states where you’ve stayed overnight, states where you’ve Answered Nature’s Call, etc., ad nauseam? Why, you’d have to be anal-acquisitive: so anal-retentive that your anus actually sucks in any nearby matter. Ewwww.

Alabama / Alaska / Arizona / Arkansas / California / Colorado / Connecticut / Delaware / Florida / Georgia / Hawaii / Idaho / Illinois / Indiana / Iowa / Kansas / Kentucky / Louisiana / Maine / Maryland / Massachusetts / Michigan / Minnesota / Mississippi / Missouri / Montana / Nebraska / Nevada / New Hampshire / New Jersey / New Mexico / New York / North Carolina / North Dakota / Ohio / Oklahoma / Oregon / Pennsylvania / Rhode Island / South Carolina / South Dakota / Tennessee / Texas / Utah / Vermont / Virginia / Washington / West Virginia / Wisconsin / Wyoming / Washington, D.C. /

Exciting, innit?

PUSHMI-PULLYU

She Who Must Be Obeyed noted the remarkable similarity of the two cats to that Fictional Beast, the Pushmi-Pullyu. If, like Doctor Dolittle, you could talk to the animals, what would they be saying?

- Can’t we all just get along?

- Sure we can. Let’s make nice for a while, then I’ll chase you outta here and try to bite you on your hindquarters.

AN OPEN LETTER

It looks like the Supremes are getting ready to consider the weighty matter of whether the Ten Commandments should be posted in front of the Texas Capitol, and/or in numerous Courthouses throughout our great land.

This kind of controversy always brings out those well-meaning people who believe that Religion is a Good Thing...and therefore, it should be Up In Our Collective Grille at Every Fucking Opportunity. Ah, friends...not so. Not so.

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I received, a few months back, a petition that urged everyone to back Presidential efforts to reinstate school prayer. Here follows my answer:
An Open Letter to the Nice Folks Who Want George W. Bush To Reinstate Prayer In School:

Thank you for the e-mail you had sent She Who Must Be Obeyed and me concerning the petition requesting that President Bush lift the prohibition of prayer in schools. This is an issue that resonates very deeply with us. Like a lot of things in this life, the petition, at first blush, sounds like a good idea. It’s like motherhood and apple pie. After all, who thinks it’s a bad thing for children to be able to pray? (Besides atheists, I mean.) Well, things are not quite so simple.

First of all, this is not something President Bush can decide by decree or executive order. Organized prayer in schools has been viewed by the Supreme Court as an unacceptable breach of the barrier between church and state. Unless there is a dramatic change in the political composition of the Court, this prohibition will not go away any time soon. President Bush will certainly do everything he can to put more conservative justices on the Court as the incumbents retire, but even conservative Supreme Court judges have a problem with organized prayer in schools.

I’m writing this, not as an atheist, but as a Jew who attends organized prayer services almost every single day. And what I will tell you is, if we were to have organized prayer in schools, who is going to decide what prayers the children say? I certainly do not want some government official, school official, or teacher telling me or my kids what prayer to say, when to say it, or to whom. And I’ll bet you don’t, either. How you talk to God is just about the most personal decision you can make. Would these be Presbyterian prayers? From the Anglican Book of Common Prayer, maybe? Catholic? What about Muslim or Hindu? How about Jewish? Baptist? Who decides?

A “one size fits all” prayer that will not offend anyone simply doesn’t exist. If it did, it would be meaningless to anyone who said it, because it would be cleansed of any real content.

Personally, I think our children have better things to do than stand up and mouth empty platitudes. That’s what Congress is for.

Once we let religion into our government, government will, sure as the sun rises each day, get into our religion...and that is a very bad idea. The reason the United States is a great nation, under God, is that the United States does not try to tell us who that God is or how to serve Him. That is a job for our religious institutions.

It may interest you to know that children have never been prohibited from praying in school or “mentioning God.” Individual prayer? Fine! Organized prayer in private schools? No problem! What is unacceptable is organized prayer in public, taxpayer-financed schools. If people want their children to pray in school in any kind of organized way, they can - and should - send them to parochial school.

I hope you will accept the above reasoning and reconsider your support for this petition. It’s an idea that sounds good on the surface - a return to some of our old-fashioned national values is always very attractive when the social fabric of the nation seems so...sleazy. But this particular idea brings with it some serious pitfalls. I can think of no better example than the text of the petition itself, which incorporates a passage from the Gospel of Mark. It’s holy scripture...but not to everyone.

Best regards,
Elisson
Well, we’ll see what happens. And if the decision doesn’t sit right with the nascent theocrats at BushCo, you’d better believe they’ll keep testing it again and again until the mountainous Wall o’ Separation is worn away to gravel.

Pah.

THEY’RE AT IT AGAIN

The Supreme Court, that is, with one doozy of a decision just handed down and another contentious one in the wings.

According to this fine AP wireservice article in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
A sharply divided U.S. Supreme Court declared Tuesday it is unconstitutional to execute killers under age 18, a landmark ruling that is expected to remove 72 inmates from death row.

The 5-4 decision forbids death sentences against killers who committed their crimes before turning 18. The court found that a growing “national consensus” opposes the practice and that juveniles, because of their immaturity and vulnerability, should not be subjected to the state’s ultimate punishment.
Lee Boyd Malvo, he of the 2002 Washington-area sniper killings, is rejoicing, as are Efrain Perez and Raul Villareal. You may not know their names, but as a former Houston resident, I do. It was in 1993 that two young girls, taking a shortcut home to beat their curfew, ran afoul of a gang of teenage thugs near the railroad tracks by T. C. Jester Park. The girls, 14 and 16, were brutalized, gang-raped, and murdered. Perez and Villareal were sentenced to die for their roles in this heinousness...a more-than-appropriate punishment, in my mind, and hardly cruel and unusual considering the horror these...turds inflicted upon the two doomed girls. But now, they get to live out their lives.

Maybe this particular case strikes too close to home for me. We lived in Houston then, and Elder Daughter was the same age as the younger of the two victims. It chills the blood.

There’s nothing magic about the age of 18. I believe that life-and-death decisions affecting juvenile criminals should be made by the judge and jury familiar with the particulars of the case. Juveniles may indeed be less culpable than adults, but I believe certain acts merit certain consequences, regardless of the age of the person committing them. A blanket decision by SCOTUS does not begin to address the facts in each case; it makes for weak justice and societal disconnection.

Let justice be tempered by mercy, but recognize that allowing predators to live among us has its price as well. Let’s remember the victims, for they do not get to walk, eat, and breathe - as their murderers do.

SOMETHING NEW HAS BEEN ADDED

to my Sidebar.

Namely, a button that links to Laurence Simon’s Carnival of the Cats site.

Carnival of the Cats

Snazzy, huh?

The button features Matata with her Uncle Sam outfit and her “Why am I putting up with this shit” expression. It’s almost as if she’s saying “I want YOU - to go to CotC and look at a bunch of ridiculous cat pictures.” Yeah, that’s it.

Feel free to appropriate it for your own Personal Weblog, if you like that sort of thing.

SWEEEET

She Who Must Be Obeyed and I just scored a sweet new computer.

Our last kludgy piece of shit was a 2000-vintage HP with a 900 Mhz Smelleron Celeron processor. When we first got it, it came bundled with Windows ME, the most heinous operating system ever to see the light of day. I’d like to bitch-slap Bill Gates with the business end of a nail-studded baseball bat for foisting that Steaming Chunk o’ Excrement on the American public. Upgrading to XP was the only thing that saved that machine from being chucked right out our second-floor window.

But this new baby rocks. At 3.2 GHz, it may not be the fastest thing out there, but (cue Galileo voice) nevertheless, it moves. And the 19-inch flat panel is oh, so easy on the eyes. Our old machine also had a 19-incher, but this one has a tiny footprint and weighs a fraction of what that massive CRT did.

My task this evening - aside from dealing with the mare’s nest of wiring behind the desk - was to get the DSL hookup working. Mission accomplished. I managed to convince BellSouth to send me the new modem gratis - the old one was a five-year-old internal modem, beyond obsolete, and I didn’t feel like screwing with the whole painful process of opening the old computer’s case, taking out the POS, then shoving it into the new one. This one was external, a snap to set up...and router-friendly to boot!

A new computer always takes some getting used to. Like a new pair of shoes, it takes a little breaking in before it’s as comfortable as your old pair. But once we have our New Baby loaded up with a decent chunk of our old image files ’n’ stuff, it’ll feel just like home.

BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES #87

In which Jay (The Zero Boss his ownself) slaps up a whole mess o’ Bloggy Crap, all held together by a framework of blank iambic pentameter à la Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “Ulysses.”

At least Zero-Man didn’t try stringing all the posts together using Joyce’s Ulysses. [In case you’re reading this, Jay, don’t be getting any ideas.]

Anyway, read ’em and weep.

Blowing Rock, NC.

In October 2001, She Who Must Be Obeyed and I, along with the Mistress of Sarcasm, took a mini-vacation up in the Boone - Blowing Rock section of North Carolina. Here’s a photo from that weekend, a couple of days of beautiful cool weather and glorious foliage.

I like to remember what Fall looks like in the dead of Winter. Call me perverse, but Fall is my favorite season. I saw this picture as I was browsing through a few folders and decided to put it up.

RIGHTEOUS REGGAE

This has been a very strange and interesting week - musically, that is.

It started last Wednesday, when I shared a first class cabin with the band Hanson on my way from Chicago back to Atlanta. Pleasant enough fellows, but I could not help but wonder what would have happened had the Mistress of Sarcasm been on the flight with me. For years, she had a sign in her room that read, “Hanson Sucks.” No way she could have kept a straight face if one of the boys had tried to have a conversation with her.

Friday night, we were at Goldfish, an Atlanta seafood eatery. The featured musical entertainment was a talented individual on the piano and keyboard, a veritable one-man band. He got my attention when he played “Baby Got Back.” The Richard Cheese version, that is: hip-hop as seen through the Las Vegas Lounge Lizard Lens. That was good for a $5 toke in the old tip jar.

But tonight, ah, that was the best.

The Mistress and I hooked up in Buckhead and headed into Midtown to Smith’s Olde Bar to hear Matisyahu.

For those of you who are not familiar with Matisyahu Miller, he is a reggae/hip-hop artist who is also a Hasidic Jew. He made an impressive appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night talk show back in December.

I am here to tell you, this boy is the Real Thing. He had the hall packed SRO, everybody moving to the reggae beat. Hey, I’ve seen Bob Marley, not to mention Toots and the fuckin’ Maytals, and as far as I’m concerned, Matisyahu can walk alongside Bob Marley in the pantheon of Reggae Greats...and he can kick Toots around the block and make his nose bleed.

Matisyahu. Josh Werner (bass) is in back.

If you get a chance to see Matisyahu, go. Now. It won’t be as much fun - or as intimate - if you wait until he’s packing stadiums. And besides, how often do you get to see a reggae artist who wears tzitzit?

MORE ADVENTURES WITH STRONG DRINK

I was sixteen when I had my first drink in a restaurant.

It was in Miami, where I was visiting the Southern Branch of Family d’Elisson. My Uncle Phil took me out to lunch at a place called the Mousetrap. In retrospect, I have no idea how I remember the name.

The waitress came to take our order, and for some completely unknown reason, I asked for a martini. Not that I expected to get it...I just up and asked for it.

And the waitress fuckin’ brought it.

A double. On the rocks.

I gulped that sonofabitch down. No problem - that was easy. Finding my steak on the plate afterwards - now, that was the tricky part.

I’m sure Phil was quietly laughing his ass off the entire way home.

ADVENTURES WITH STRONG DRINK

It’s not often a bottle of liquor will set me to reminiscing, but it can happen.

I spent last weekend in the North Georgia mountains at a religious retreat with a Buncha Guys. Evening activities at these affairs generally involve the consumption of large quantities of Adult Beverages, and Saturday night, once the Sabbath prohibition against kindling fire is over, the campfire gets fired up and the cigars come out.

The variety of said Adult Beverages is enormous, ranging from the sublime (Booker Noe’s bourbon, The Balvenie DoubleWood single malt Scotch) to the ridiculous (Smirnoff Orange Twist Vodka). No matter - it all finds a happy home in someone’s gullet. Things typically don’t get excessively rowdy, but everyone has a good time, in the process jacking up the BAC to the point where there’s little risk of freezing to death.

This year, someone brought an old bottle that must have been lurking in the back of the Old Lacquer Liquor Locker. A bottle of Peter Heering’s fine Danish cherry liqueur.

You can go to any reasonably well-provisioned Booze Shoppe and find Peter Heering, AKA Cherry Heering. It’s in the cordial section, right there amongst the Grand Marnier, the Drambuie, the Cointreau, the Amaretto di Saronno - all of those sweet desserty-type drinks. It’s a fine after-dinner drink, although there are many who find the taste disturbingly reminiscent of cough syrup. Good cough syrup.

This bottle, however, had to be upwards of twenty or thirty years old, which made me think back to the days when it was new...and before. The old men who drank it back then (well, they seemed old to us) used to call the stuff “Cherry Herring.” Whether they were trying to be funny, or whether it was a mispronunciation born out of the similarity between the words “Heering” and “Herring,” it’s the name I grew up hearing.

How nice to see it on an old bottle again, where it could bring back memories of Sunday afternoons visiting the grandparents. Sometimes, on those Sundays, my Dad and his father would enjoy a postprandial schnapps - Cherry Heering, like as not. And sometimes they would let me have a taste, in a thick-walled cordial glass that held a mere thimbleful. It was like being let in on the Great Secret of the Brotherhood of Men.

I’m not sure there really is a secret, aside from “pissing standing up is great, but it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.” But I’ll toast those memories anyway, with a shot of “Cherry Herring.”

CARNIVAL OF THE CATS #49

Mind of Mog hosts the Carnival of the Cats this week, leaving me to ponder just what kind of mind a Mog might have. No matter: it is evidently the kind of mind that appreciates the finest in Animal Companions, that quintessence of Intelligence and Body Hair, felis domesticus.

“Common house cat”? Pfaugh, I say. Cats are regal, even snooty. Cats do not hump your leg (actually, Matata might try, but we suspect she’s part dog) and do not pant slavishly after their masters. Cats, like the smartest among us, bury their shit.

Cats: they’re what’s for dinner gr-r-r-eat!

LIVE FROM THE STUPID CARPET

It is I, Mac from the currently ruined shambles of pesky’apostrophe. I have been given the keys to the House o’ Elisson. Silly monkey.

I am currently ready to go stark raving mad from the hijinks going on at the server on which I am hosted. Two-ish days of intermittent service followed by a day of no service followed by half a day of service followed by what I hope is a temporary period of no service at all. Bitches, I’m fragile, dammit! I’m sure by the way I’m perched at my office chair hyperventilating you can tell that I’m a delicate giver goddess whose tender feelings can only take so much jerking around.

Now, combined with the fact that we may or may not get eight inches of snow tomorrow...well...I’m done in. I’m two seconds from walking over to the local news station and choking the life out of our weather person. Amy Freeze. Sure, her name is really Amy Freeze. And my name is Mac Imaboutagonuts.

Eh.

So now that that’s out of my system, who is watching the awards tonight? I’ll admit, I’m watching. I don’t give a rat’s ass about who wins. Mostly, Mr. Fish and I will be playing our usual awards game of ‘Spot the Botox’ed Forehead’ and I will be providing the snarky fashion police commentary.

I tried watching Star Jones and Kathy Whatsherface on the red carpet during the last awards show, but Star Jones makes me want to reach through the television and play ‘whack a big ass head’ and that Kathy chick is the least funny person I can think of. They were enough to make me miss Joan Rivers, and I hate Joan Rivers.

It occurs to me that it sounds like I hate everyone. Well...maybe today I do. Not everyone. Just people who are pissing me off. Which is a lot of people today.

What I’d really like to see for a red carpet commentary team is me, Sylvia Browne [you know, the psychic chick], and Carrot Top. While I admit that I have a slight crush on Carrot Top [dude, shut up! I have a thing for red heads and have you seen him without a shirt on? Damn!], I think he could provide commentary that’s at least as ludicrous as Kathy Whatsherhead and who wouldn’t love to hear Sylvia Browne shout out in her whiskey voice, “Nicole Kidman! Oh honey, your spirit guide tells me that you’re not going to win tonight, but I’m predicting that you and Tom will get back together in 2008. Oh, look out for large bodies of water.” Come on, comedy gold!

What will my role in all this be? I’ll be wearing a silver spangled dress and carrying a triangle. So anytime Sylvia or old Carrot Top let loose with a zing-ah, I’ll push to the front of the camera and ding the triangle to signify that something silly has been said. It’ll be a lot like the Gong Show. I think it would be a hit.

NICE ’N’ (OOF) COMFY

Ten pounds of crap cat in a two-pound box.

It’s a favorite kitty pastime: “How small a space can I cram my Fat Kitty Ass into?” Here, Matata demonstrates that she can (sorta) fit into an Airheads box. Airheads? Why, that box fits in both the physical and metaphorical senses!

Sister, sister.

Here, the “goils” are acting downright sisterly. What better place to rest your head than your sister kitty’s warm, fuzzy flank?

Hmmm. Time for me to go rest my head against the warm, non-fuzzy flank of She Who Must Be Obeyed.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT FRIDAYS ’N’ MEMES?

What’s this on the bottom of my shoe?

Why, it’s another blogmeme!

But since I’m a sucker for things literary, let’s just try this one, shall we? Here’s all you do:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence on your blog along with these instructions.

Use the book that’s closest to hand - don’t waste time searching around for the “coolest” book you can find. Use what’s actually next to you, even if it’s a textbook, one of your “guilty pleasure” romance novels, or...whatever.

Now, here’s mine:

From James L. Riggs, Engineering Economics (McGraw-Hill, ©1977):

“The promotion would cost $100,000.”

Thanx and a tip o’ th’ Elisson fedora to Goose at Comments from Left Field.

FRIDAY ARK

Don’t forget to check out the Friday Ark...as always, hosted by that most esteemed Modulator. If it crawls, walks, runs - hell, even if it just lays there waiting to get its belly rubbed, you’ll find it there.

’Scuse me while I go attend to my pet Slime Mold, Zsa-Zsa. She/he/it wants its belly rubbed.

A DADDY’S HEART IS GLADDENED

The Mistress. [Photo by Christian.]

when his little girl comes home.

Well, she’s not all that little any more, but to her Dad, the Mistress of Sarcasm will always be his little girl.

She’s here for a weekend visit, exhibiting one of her pieces in the Atlanta Jewelry Show. Some of her friends’ work also made it in; many others did not. But when she got the news that her Hitchcock-themed pendant had been selected, she was overjoyed. Sweet validation!

The Birds is coming...

Impressive work, no?

SCREW THE CATS, WE’RE BLOGGIN’ THE HORSE THIS WEEK

The Mistress and Mi Anam.

Yes, once upon a time, the Mistress had a horse. Mi Anam was her heart’s delight, an Arabian that she trained herself from yearling days, and showed in Hunter Pleasure classes, even unto the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

We miss Anam, but I’m here to tell ya, cats are a lot less expensive. Also, they shit in a box.

OK, horses shit in a box, too, but it doesn’t count if it’s big enough to walk around in, or if you have to use a shovel to muck it out.

DEADBLOGGIN’

Lair Simon, the twisted genius responsible for The IFOC Dead Pool, somehow manages to hold down a day job while posting reams of content, both on the Dead Pool site and on his main blog, This Blog Is Full Of Crap. Not to mention his catcams, and Carnival of the Cats, et cetera. I get carpal tunnel syndrome just from thinkin’ about it, I tell ya.

The Dead Pool is perhaps a tad morbid for those of my Esteemed Readers with delicate sensibilities, but, hey, even She Who Must Be Obeyed - who is famously unwilling to deal with Mortality-Related Matters - asks me, when someone famous keels over, whether anyone had that person on their Dead Pool Roster.

What with the recent demise of Hunter S. Thompson, Sandra Dee, John Raitt, among other notables - none of whom were on my Dead Pool Roster, by the way - I have been visiting that site regularly to drop the occasional tidbit. And this little Slice o’ Bloggerel. Enjoy.

* * *

O, don’t ask for whom the bell tolls,
Perhaps it tolls for thee.
And if you’re on my Dead Pool roll,
Oh, Boy! More points for me!

We have a finite time to spend
Upon this happy Earth.
And when that time comes to its end,
What score will you be worth?

Start with One Hundred Twenty Five,
And then subtract your years:
That is, your age when Not Alive.
(The age each of us fears.)

Take you the difference, then, to get
Your IFOC Dead Pool Score.
A solo shot? Good show, you bet!
Just add - yes! - thirty more.

So as the Reaper swings his scythe,
Collecting all them dead souls,
Sit back and watch your totals rise!
Don’t ask for whom the bell tolls!

CHICAGO BLOGGO, PART 2

Returned home yesterday evening after a productive (albeit brief) visit to Chicargo. I’m not sure how the travel office pulled this one off, but I ended up flying the entire round trip in First Class. Whoop-de-do.

American Airlines, like most others these days, is struggling, so First ain’t what it used to be. The seat was nice, big, and comfortable, with a built-in headrest that did a nice job of cradling the Noggin d’Elisson. Even better, the seat actually reclined, despite the fact that I was in the last row. This allowed me to lay back without the guilt I normally feel when I crush the kneecaps of the poor son of a bitch sitting behind me.

There was no meal. Continental will still serve a perfunctory meal in First, but American apparently does not, at least on such a relatively short flight. But they do give you a nice little dish of warm mixed nuts. Good ones, too: cashews, filberts, pistachios, and a smattering of pecans. None of them low-rent peanuts.

Much nicer than the ubiquitous “Scrotum Snack” most airlines hand you: a sack of nuts. Or even worse, that nasty packet of Snacky Substances (“with the Pong o’ Almost Real Cheese!”) No, this was good.

It’s ridiculous to gripe about the lack of meals on most airplane flights. One could make the case that the extinction of Airline Food is a Good Thing. For the most part, it sucks, no matter whether you’re in Coach, First, or the Johnny-come-lately Business Class. Even in the ancient days when Eastern Airlines (remember them?) would serve a filet mignon on toast, they would cook that bad boy until it was grey and lifeless. Feh. So if you want to eat on the plane, pack yer own damn meal.

It would be whiny to complain that the coffee was served in a plastic cup instead of heavy china. The comfy seat more than made up for that.

My seatmate was evidently a lawyer, and he pretty much kept to himself while he knocked out a lengthy document that contained the word “Whereas” about 157 times. Meanwhile, the mid-twentyish guy sitting in front of me was having an animated conversation with the woman sitting next to him, something about music. He and his brothers (they were in my row, across the aisle) apparently were in a band that had just released a new CD after a gap of several years. Unlike their earlier stuff, the new release was independently produced - it was charting well in the U.K. and was due to come out soon in the States.

When the plane landed and we started to get off, I asked the young man why the group had gone indie. Seems that their label had moved into hip-hop big time, and no longer fit with their needs. Besides, going independent made more sense today, given the seismic shifts in how music is distributed - downloads, etc.

What brought Isaac (for that was his name) and his two brothers to Atlanta, I asked. Performing? No, just taking a break for a few days.

Isaac is 24 now, and his brothers Taylor and Zac are 21 and 19. They don’t look at all like they did ten years ago when they released their first album. Hell, they were little kids then.

Their music? Not my cup of tea, but then again, I’m 52 years old. I’ve been playing Skankin’ Pickle lately, being in a ska-punk mood all week.

But I wish ’em well. MmmBop, dudes.

CARNIVAL OF THE VANITIES #127

This week’s Carnival is up at PunditGuy. Many good reads...be sure to pay a visit.

CHICAGO BLOGGO

Yeah, I know there’s a blog out there with that name (or something like it), but I don’t give a rat’s ass. I’m appropriating it for the title of this post, mainly because that’s where I am as I write this.

Flight got in late - O’Hare, surprise! - but I was able to enjoy a late dinner with Jimmy P., our resident Sales Guy. Jambalaya, loaded up with plenty of Tabasco to give it that extra kick, washed down with lashings of Warsteiner and Himbeergeist. Ya gotta watch out for that Himbeergeist...raspberry firewater, served icy, syrupy cold. Yowzah.

And then a half hour soak in Jimmy’s hot tub, with the full moon above, fifteen degrees air temp, but who cared?

Now back in the hotel, running through my e-mails and posting this. I oughta be in bed...

The noteworthy part of the trip, though, was that when I showed up at the airport gate in Atlanta, who should be standing there but Dan P., my cousin Stephanie’s happy spouse! After the obligatory double take, I went over to say hello. It’s been four years since I last saw Dan, and we had a good time catching each other up on family stuff. Family reunions are difficult and all too rare, with everyone scattered to the four winds - Stef and Dan in Naperville, Illinois and us in Atlanta - so this was a special treat.

Thank Gawd I don’t pick my nose in public. You never know who you might run into, out of the blue.

A VILE PIECE O’ VERSE

She Who Must Be Obeyed tells me that people don’t like to read about crap. And I guess she’s right...although the immense popularity of the Famously Constipated Dooce™ would seem to put the lie to that assertion.

So when I cooked up this particularly vile limerick, I figured it would be better not to post it in the open, where it would horrify my Esteemed Readers. Instead, you’ll have to hunt for it...by looking in the Comments to this post or by clicking on this link.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

TODAY’S THEME: FOODS THAT BEGIN WITH “S”

Another SWMBO salad.

Our friends Steve and Sue - they of the formerly Excessive Luggage Quantities, who have been Saved by the Power of Blogging - sat down to a wonderful lunch Sunday, prepared by the hand of She Who Must Be Obeyed. It was a fine welcome-home treat for me and Steve after spending the weekend in the North Georgia mountains eating Camp Cuisine.

A salad, pictured above, with numerous Tasty Ingredients. Grilled salmon filets, perched atop a bed of pesto-enrobed spaghetti. Exquisite. Yep, don’t let all my self-centered foodblogging give you the wrong idea. I’m an OK cook, but the Missus swings a mean axe in the kitchen.

Hmm. Salad, spaghetti, salmon, Steve, Sue, SWMBO. Do I sense a theme?

HAILING FREQUENCY

Gravel, it ain’t.

It was about 6:30 this evening when the sirens started wailing and the northern sky became an eerie, inky black. Lightning - intense lightning - crackled in the distance, revealing enormous, multilayered storm clouds.

Normally, our cats are curious about that mysterious bottom-most level of the house, the Place Where They Dare Not Go, but their curiosity evaporates when we want them to go there. Perversely, they hid upstairs even as we tried to coax them to the safety of the basement. No point in chasing them. Chances are, they would instinctively find the safest spot in the house by themselves.

But She Who Must Be Obeyed and I went down. It’s a ground-level basement, complete with windows, so as a storm cellar it leaves much to be desired - but it beats being exposed on the second floor. And the windows allowed us to watch as the sheets of rain came down, accompanied by the escalating tick-tick-clack of the hailstones as they rattled out of the clouds.

Pea-size, dime-size, nickel-size, finally quarter-size. That’s plenty big enough for me. I’ve heard stories of softball- and grapefruit-size hail in Texas, and I’ve seen the aftermath: smashed windshields, “pebble finish” cars, airplane wings with huge dings. No, thank you.

Things settled down after a while, and I ran to grab a couple of the larger stones for souvenirs. Quarter-size, easily. The picture above shows the size distribution. Apparently, bigger stones fell just a few miles away, where my office is. Good thing I left when I did, or Mr. Chevy would’ve had a major migraine.

Last month, ice. This month, hail. What’s next?

AN OPEN LETTER

To the Phishing, Spamming Asshole Who Sent Me The Offishul-Looking e-Mail Purportedly From eBay -

Dear Putz:

If you’re going to the trouble of sending out phishing e-mails that are supposedly being sent out by eBay to warn members that their registration is being suspended, please take the trouble to write your stupid-ass scammerama in proper English.

This simply will not do:
Dear eBay Member,

I’ve boldfaced the spelling errors. There is also at least one missing comma. Oh, wait - there’s more! At the bottom of the e-mail, you’ve got:
You are required to verify your eBay account by following link below:

Hmm, seems to be missing a “the” between “following” and “link.”
And the close:
Respectfully,
Trust and safety Department
eBay Inc.

Whoopsie! Forgot to cap that “S.”

Honestly, Mr. Asshole. Do you really think you’re going to fool anyone with this amateurish piece of shit? I mean, you got the logotypes right, and you spoofed the headers and all that, and then you go and screw it up with your execrable language skills. Sad...sad.

Now you just go back and take a few more of those English classes. Ninth grade’s a bitch, but stick with it. And, oh yeah - fuck you to death.

Best regards,
Elisson
